Message from AARP New Jersey s State President

With 1.3 million members in New Jersey and millions more nationwide, AARP should sound familiar to many New Jersey adults. Because of AARP’s size, it is bound to mean many different things to many different people. As the volunteer president of AARP New Jersey, I’d like to take the time to tell you more about our organization and to provide you with some helpful sources.

People have many different ideas about what AARP is, and almost everyone is correct. AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization for people 50 and older. We are involved in many different activities, but our single mission is to enhance the quality of life for all as we age.

Whether we are ensuring lower health care costs or working to help you protect your investments, AARP is involved in the nation’s capital, state houses across the country, and the courts advocating on behalf of those 50+ and their families. If you want to see what AARP is doing nationally, you can visit . Or, if you are interested in issues and advocacy in New Jersey, you can find out more on the .

AARP volunteers across the state are busy helping make changes and providing you with services like the Driver Safety Course (1-888-227-7669). AARP encourages volunteering so much that it started Create the Good. The program encourages volunteering time in your community whether you have five minutes, five hours, or five days. Find out more by visiting .

There are other great resources that AARP does not provide but supports like the Prescription Drug Retail Price Registry, which allows consumers to compare drug costs of the exact same prescription drug at different pharmacies from their home. If you are interested in learning more about the registry you can visit or call the Division of Consumer Affairs who manages the registry at 1-800-242-5846.

Maybe you have read an article about the AARP supported Hospital Error Accountability Law (HEAL), that requires the public reporting of preventable medical errors or “never events” (because they should never happen). If you or a friend needs surgery and needs more information you can call 1-800-418-1397 or you can or go online to .

Or maybe you heard about us through the Identity Theft Prevention Act which allows individuals to “freeze” or lock access to their credit file. If you have suffered from Identity Theft in the past or would like to know how you can prevent this you can .

These are just a few of the programs and services that AARP has to offer or supports. I urge you to take the time to learn how you and your family can benefit from AARP. Thank you for your time and support.
