Looking for a fun, rewarding way to volunteer for a day? You’ll want to sign up to join AARP Iowa members and other community organizations “Rock the Block” and help an older Iowan with much-needed home repairs on Saturday, Sept. 23 in the Des Moines area.

Research shows that 80% of older citizens want to remain in their homes as they age. This becomes a problem for those who are no longer able to manage routine repairs or whose homes need basic modifications to accommodate changing needs as the age.

To help Central Iowans in need, AARP Iowa in support of Create the Good are joining forces with Rebuilding Together and Wells Fargo to help low-income, older homeowners with home modifications, weatherization and maintenance projects that will help them maintain their independence and be able to continue to contribute to their communities.

This fall, hundreds of Iowa volunteers will help renovate Des Moines’ Chesterfield neighborhood, where Habitat for Humanity is building a block of new homes. The goal of the project is to help the entire community have a new, fresh face and provide much needed revitalization.

Volunteers are needed all day on Thursday Sept. 23, as AARP and Wells Fargo volunteers work with Rebuilding Together and Habitat and help us “Rock the Block.”

It doesn’t matter what your level of experience is, we can use your help. We need volunteers willing to paint, clean, landscape or lend a hand with plumbing, electrical, or carpentry work. We will have a range of jobs to fit whatever you would like to do—however you would like to contribute your talents, and have some fun in the process.

Volunteers who have participated in this program in the past find this an extremely rewarding experience. By giving your time for one day, you improve the life of an older Iowan who is at risk of losing their independence, meet other AARP members, and share the satisfaction of working together to make a difference.
