Meet AARP New Jersey s Executive Council
The Council provides strategic advice and input to the staff in order to effectively implement the State Office’s plan. Additionally the members utilize their professional expertise and connections to expand our reach and enhance our work throughout the state. These distinguished leaders help enhance our work by opening doors and granting us access to their professional contacts.
Members of AARP New Jersey’s Executive Council include:
Sy Larson – State President
Simeon (Sy) Larson was selected as AARP New Jersey State President in February 2006. Sy’s broad-based experience and expertise in the field of public policy spans more than 50 years and includes being an activist, teacher, scholar, and long-time AARP volunteer. Sy has been a Professor and Chair of the Department of Labor Studies in the School of Management & Labor Relations at Rutgers University. Upon his retirement in 1991, Sy continued his engagement in public advocacy to include issues pertinent to mature New Jerseyans.
Marilyn Askin – Chief Legislative Advocate
Marilyn Askin is also a long-time AARP volunteer and brings a diverse background to her position. Before becoming an attorney, she worked as a newspaper reporter, a high school English teacher, and a public relations professional. As a certified attorney she practiced what is known today as elder law. Marilyn is a former President of the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association and a former AARP New Jersey State President.
Robert Holmes – Executive Council Member
Robert Holmes is a Professor at the Rutgers School of Law in Newark, NJ. He is a former member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Disciplinary Review Board and a former president of the New Jersey Public Policy Research Institute. Robert is a board member for several different organizations some are the Public Interest Law Center of New Jersey and Legal Services of New Jersey.
Ken Lindhorst – Executive Council Member
W. Kenneth Lindhorst has over 30 years of experience with AT&T in international operations, and law and government relations. While working for AT&T he managed government relations activities at state, national, and international levels. He also has extensive expertise in international, regulatory, and commercial law. Ken has also worked as a professor at Louisiana Tech University, an attorney, and a lobbyist. Ken is a former member of AARP’s National Policy Council.
William Waldman – Executive Council Member
William Waldman is a Visiting Professor, Lecturer, and Executive in Residence at the Rutgers University School of Social Work. He has served as Director of the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services, Deputy Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Human Services, and as Commissioner of the Department. Bill has also been a member of the cabinet for three New Jersey Governors.

Without our volunteers, AARP New Jersey would not be able to accomplish all that we do. We are lucky to work with a variety of dedicated volunteers. The AARP New Jersey Executive Council is an all volunteer council that consists of 5 members who are highly accomplished professional leaders of N.J.The Council provides strategic advice and input to the staff in order to effectively implement the State Office’s plan. Additionally the members utilize their professional expertise and connections to expand our reach and enhance our work throughout the state.
