For two decades, Byrd helped seniors in his hometown of Malvern, file their taxes through the AARP Tax-Aide program. Since its inception in 1968, AARP Tax-Aide has helped over 40 million people file their tax returns.
Byrd became interested in volunteering for the Tax-Aide program after retiring from his job at Arkansas Power and Light. When he started at Tax-Aide, the counselors filed paper returns; today the system is computerized. But for Byrd it wasn’t important how the taxes were filed but that he was able to help people with this important task. He also enjoyed working with the other volunteers. “It has been a pleasure to work with each and every one who has put in time to serve the people on their taxes each year,” said Byrd.
Byrd, who is a WWII and a Korean War veteran, was recently recognized for his twenty years of service by his fellow counselors. He is taking a break from volunteering but may be back in the future. Byrd still lives in Malvern with his wife Wanda.
AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service available to low and moderate-income taxpayers of all ages with special attention to people age 60 and older.
