Top Local Volunteer for 2010 Named at DC Volunteers Luncheon
As family and friends looked on, the Andrus Award trophy was presented to Paredes along with a red and gold Andrus Award lapel pin. Denise Rolark Barnes, AARP DC state president, recognized the three other nominees, Veapplise Edwards, Sehon Miller and Joyce M. Vaden with a silver Andrus Award lapel pin.

George Rowan, AARP Board Member, congratulated all the volunteers for their successes in 2010. He likened them to the founder of AARP, Ethel Percy Andrus, whose motto was “To serve, not be served.”
A lunch buffet was served and volunteers worked off the calories by line dancing, slow dancing and hand dancing. A disc jockey provided music. The Spirit crew also performed two musical numbers for the audience.

Top Local Volunteer for 2010 Named at DC Volunteers Luncheon
Hundreds of AARP members braved the rain and enjoyed a lunch cruise on the Potomac River as the 2010 Andrus Award recipient and other outstanding AARP District of Columbia volunteers were recognized. Louis Davis, Jr., AARP DC senior state director, presented the local AARP’s top volunteer award, the Andrus Award, to Evangeline “Vangie” Paredes. Ninety-four year-old Paredes volunteers with the Medicare Patrol, the AARP DC Ambassadors and the AARP (Federal Affairs) Strike Force. “Vangie” has also held a number of chapter offices and gives her time to help veterans in her community.As family and friends looked on, the Andrus Award trophy was presented to Paredes along with a red and gold Andrus Award lapel pin.
