Create The Good Making a Difference in Pierre
Small Actions, Big Results
As plans developed for a new Food Bank in the Pierre Area, PARTA volunteers jumped at the opportunity for their efforts to have a far reaching impact. Using a portion of their grant money, the group purchased office supplies to help the Food Bank get up and running, as well as a vacuum cleaner for the office. Volunteers also assist with packing senior food boxes. During a recent packing session, the group packed more than 1200 senior food boxes in just 4 hours!
Earlier this spring, the group provided $1,000 to sponsor free or reduced rate CPR for seniors at the local YMCA. These classes helped prepare individuals to assist other seniors, their family members, and grandchildren if an emergency arises.
The Good Keeps Going
And, if feeding the hungry and saving lives weren’t enough, the group sponsored a downtown trash container for the city and picked up trash on “Clean Up Green Up” day. They supported the Capitol Centennial Celebration by providing “Capitol Cookies” for the South Dakota Retired Teachers’ Convention, served food at the Capitol Centennial Celebration, and encouraged utilization of the appliance rebate program.
Local residents, Jean Easland, Peg Logan and Shirley Eisnach serve on the Create the Good committee in Pierre and have been instrumental in organizing the group’s activities. Throughout the remainder of 2010 and beyond, the group will be looking for and highlighting ways to give back and make a difference in Pierre.
