Utahns for Ethical Government Initiative Effort Continues

AARP Utah has been actively supporting the Utahns For Ethical Government initiative effort since its launch in the summer of 2009. The initiative, if passed, would enact a strict code of ethical standards for Utah lawmakers and create an Independent Ethics Commission to apply the code and make enforcement recommendations to the Utah Legislature

Previously, Utahns For Ethical Government’s goal was to obtain the needed signatures by April 15, 2010 to insure that the initiative would be on the 2010 statewide ballot. The campaign came close, but did not succeed in that immediate goal.

Utahns for Ethical Government now has a new deadline for obtaining sufficient signatures to place ethics reform on the general election ballot in 2012. If they are able to obtain the required number of 95,000 valid signatures across the state by August 12, 2010, the question will be put before the public on the 2012 ballot. Those signatures must be distributed throughout Utah with at least 10% in 26 of the 29 Senate Districts.

If you would like to help with the signature gathering effort, there is still time to volunteer! Please contact Connie Watts at to find out how you can help in your area of the state.
