Maumelle Chapter Cookbook Benefits the Community
The chapter’s 95 -100 AARP members donates to charities and causes such as the Hope Alliance food pantry; Maumelle's Lake Willastien Park; scholarships for non traditional students; books, backpacks and supplies for local schools; and the Red Cross Haiti Fund Relief. “We like to hit all areas of the community and wherever there is a need,” said Beverly Alberson, chapter president.
“Every donation makes us feel good,” said Theresa Hutcherson, a chapter volunteer. “A little girl was absolutely beaming as she received one of our backpacks. It made us feel so good to help a single mother who just had a few more credits to go toward getting her degree. The food pantry is so genuinely grateful for the donations we make during the holidays. We partnered with the Senior Center this winter to have a coat drive. There are low income elderly who were warmer this winter because of our efforts. When we see someone sitting on the park bench next to the tree we donated, well.... it all just makes our efforts so worthwhile,” she explained.
To fund the chapter's community service efforts, volunteers have sold popcorn and parked cars on the Fourth of July, had a garage sale, and sold old street signs when the old ones were replaced. The most successful fund raising activity has been the chapter’s cookbook titled, “Cooking with Seasoned Seniors.” Publishing costs were covered by selling advertising space in the cookbook to local businesses, and yes, the rest is gravy. “The total profit is returned to the community,” said Alberson.
