AARP Utah Gets Connected at Annual Volunteer Summit

Oct. 12 and 13 were two lively and fun-filled days at AARP Utah’s Volunteer summit, held this year at the Fort Douglas Officer’s Club on the University of Utah Campus. This annual event, held in conjunction with the Andrus and Outstanding Volunteers Awards Dinner, brings together AARP Utah’s staff, Executive Council, statewide volunteer Area Coordinators, as well as the volunteer leadership from the state affiliates of AARP’s Driver Safety Program, Tax-Aide Program and Utah Retired School Employee Association.

In the kick-off presentation, AARP and You: A Shared History, attendees were treated to a fascinating look at AARP’s founder, Ethel Percy Andrus, and the organization’s early history. Presenter Lily Liu, AARP’s Brand Communications Manager, also highlighted Utah’s part in AARP’s past, delighting the audience with the recounting of AARP’s then the American Association of Retired Persons 1965 national meeting that was held that year in Salt Lake City.

Following Liu’s presentation AARP West Regional Volunteer Director, Helen Russ and AARP NRTA Vice President, Megan Hookey provided personal experience and encouraging words, about volunteering in the association.

Lincoln Nehring from the Utah Health Policy Project provided a health care law update and brief discussion of state health care policy issues. AARP Utah Associate State Director for Advocacy, Laura Polacheck gave a brief Social Security update and look ahead to the 2011 Utah State legislative session.

The lunchtime keynote speaker was KUER’s Doug Fabrizio, host of the popular weekday program, RadioWest. His speech entitled “Listen Up” was well-received and thought -provoking talk on the nature of listening, connecting and interacting in this ever-changing technological age.

In addition to the guest speakers, the event, organized and led by AARP Utah volunteers, provides an opportunity for the volunteer leadership to meet together, report on activities in their respective areas of the state, and plan out their projects for the coming year. By all accounts, 2010 was a successful year of outreach, advocacy, and connecting events statewide and 2011 looks to be even more outstanding!
