AARP DC Food Drive Combats Hunger with 7600 Meals
Oct. 22, District of Columbia residents responded to these alarming facts by donating 7,683 pounds of food to the food bank during the 2nd Annual AARP DC Food Drive. The food collected will provide 7600 meals to individuals and families.
More than 1,000 people donated, and more than 90 volunteers and AARP staff accepted, non-perishable food outside nine Safeway and Giant grocery stores. There was at least one Food Drive collection store in each of DC’s eight wards.

Safeway, 1747 Columbia Rd. NW, Ward 1: 808 Pounds
Giant, 1345 Park Rd. NW, Ward 1: 478 Pounds
Giant, 4303 Connecticut Ave. NW, Ward 3: 626 Pounds
Safeway, 6500 Piney Branch Rd. NW, Ward 4: 1,319 Pounds
Giant, 1050 Brentwood Rd. NE, Ward 5: 776 Pounds
Safeway, 401 M St. SW, Ward 6: 870 Pounds
Safeway, 322 40th St. NE, Ward 7: 867 Pounds
Giant, 1535 Alabama Ave. SE, Ward 8: 946 Pounds
In addition, 46 pounds of food was donated directly to the food bank in the name of AARP DC, and a donor wrote a check for $100 to the Capital Area Food Bank.
Grocery shoppers saw AARP’s Create the Good branded signs and volunteers at the collection stations as they entered the store, and heard periodic in-store announcements reminding them to donate to the Food Drive. A local news crew captured video of the collection station at one site, and provided it to several local TV news stations.
