Tupelo Joins City of Service Volunteerism Initiative - AARP MS
Founded in New York City on September 10, 2009, the Cities of Service coalition and its member cities are working to find new ways to harness the power of volunteers to help solve local challenges. The coalition aims to accelerate the service movement at the most local level, connecting local needs to willing volunteers in innovative and impactful ways, thus creating a new chapter in America’s longstanding history with service.
The coalition includes more than 100 mayors who represent more than 49 million Americans. Each coalition member has made a commitment to advance service strategies in their respective cities by crafting a high-impact service plan and to work with other mayors around the country.
Volunteers are identified to serve as Chief Service Officers in smaller cities through a partnership with AARP.
“American cities face serious challenges and many cities want to take advantage of every resource available to them – including the time and energy of public-spirited residents – to address those challenges,” said Ivory Craig, AARP Mississippi Associate State Director for Community Outreach. “We are pleased that the city of Tupelo has chosen to become a part of Cities of Service.”
AARP will recruit for a Chief Service Officer who will be responsible for the development and launch of the city’s high-impact service plan. He or she will serve a one-year term as a volunteer in the mayor’s office reporting directly to the mayor or an appropriate designee.
Recruitment of the Chief Service Officer position will be done through the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. A position also will be posted on the webpage.
