Estelle Schwartz Named Andrus Award Winner
Schwartz has been an instructor and district coordinator for the AARP Driver Safety Program since 1992. She has performed training, marketing and volunteer management duties over the years in addition to teaching classes herself across the state’s four southernmost counties. She has been active with the Red Cross, the RSVP Program and for the past 11 years has been actively involved with children at the Windhall Mountain School in a variety of volunteer roles. She also works at the local food shelf at least twice a week.
Her philosophy is twofold: “It’s easier to smile than frown, and in order to stay healthy and lead a full life one must stay busy doing what one can for others.”
“Estelle provides an excellent example of the difference that volunteering can make in the lives of individuals and in the well-being and vitality of a community,” said Jim Leddy, state president at AARP Vermont. “She works with both young children and older Vermonters providing critical services and enhancing the lives of these individuals with her time, talents and commitment. Estelle truly embodies the spirit of the Andrus Award and her many accomplishments are a testament to the power of volunteerism.”
The purpose of the Andrus Community Service Award is to recognize outstanding AARP volunteers and members who are making a powerful difference in their communities, in ways that are consistent with AARP’s mission and vision and that inspire others to service.

Estelle Schwartz Named Andrus Award Winner
Estelle Schwartz of Bondville has been named as the 2010 winner of the AARP Andrus Community Service Award. The award is named for AARP founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, an educator and tireless advocate of community service and volunteerism.
