' Book on into Reading' on the Western Slope

In honor of Colorado Cares Day, AARP Colorado and Serve Colorado – Governor’s Commission on Community Service joined forces for the 1st annual “Book on into Reading” event to benefit elementary school children in need of reading material. Books were collected through July 29 in Mesa County at the Fruita Civic Center, 325 East Aspen Ave. The books were then given to children at the same location during Colorado Cares Day, an event that featured a farmer’s market, science demonstrations and other fun activities. Through this partnership, AARP and Serve Colorado are urging the public to get involved in elementary reading. Third-grade reading is a critical launch point for academic achievement and success. Up to third grade, students are learning to read; after third grade students are reading to learn. Last year, 29 percent of Colorado third-graders scored either partially proficient or unsatisfactory on the Colorado Student Assessment Plan. “Early reading success matters in Colorado; it is our vision for every child in Colorado to be a successful reader,” said Jenna Hansen, volunteer generation program coordinator.
