Through the efforts of the 65 AARP NC Chapters, NC Retired School Personnel Association chapters and senior centers in the state, a statewide food drive has been organized to replenish the seven Feeding America food banks in NC with food collections from organized food drives for older people.
The plan is to gather over 10,000 pounds of food to feed over 5,000 older people statewide. Some AARP volunteers are hosting Create the Good parties to raise awareness about senior hunger. For example, the Sampson County AARP chapter conducts a food drive every two weeks among its members to donate food for a senior congregate housing complex. Over 1,000 pounds of food has been collected since July 1 and distributed to older adults who live in the congregate complex. Many folks are very grateful, such as Minnie, who stated, “This food gives me peace of mind because now I do not have to choose between which medications to skip since I have food.”
For the tenth year, the AARP NC staff and Executive Council volunteers will volunteer with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina to package and sort food and non-food items to feed older adults and families in the 28-county jurisdiction of that food bank. Last year, AARP NC staff and volunteers packaged over 6,000 pounds of food to help families in Wake County.
