You can help.
This fall, volunteer with , the Boston host of Experience Corps, and make a difference in the lives of at risk Boston public schoolchildren. Volunteers with the program have helped students to increase their literacy skills by more than 60 percent.
Generations Incorporated places highly trained older volunteers as mentors and reading coaches in public elementary schools and after school programs. Volunteers can coach a child, one-on-one; they may also work with a small group of students in the classroom. With individual time and guidance, each child has the chance to improve his or her reading skills by two to three levels.
Several options for volunteering are available during the 2011-2012 school year to accommodate various interests and schedules. Training is provided. Volunteers can contribute as few as two hours per week or as many as 12.

The numbers are alarming: more than 65 percent of greater Boston's children struggle with literacy, putting them at a higher risk for school failure. A recent study found that students who do not read proficiently by third grade are than proficient readers.Volunteer Resources
