“Being a Tax-Aide volunteer is the most gratifying experience I have ever had in terms of helping others,” says Curtis Bean, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide State Coordinator. “Tax time can be challenging for everyone, but it can be particularly stressful for those with limited resources. We see people come to our sites who are so fearful of the process, but after meeting with us, they walk out with gratitude and peace of mind. As a volunteer, there is no greater reward.”

No Experience Necessary br

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers assist individuals with the preparation of their federal and state basic income tax returns. Even if you don’t have accounting or tax preparation experience, becoming a Tax-Aide volunteer may be right for you. AARP provides training in tax law procedures, preparing tax forms and using tax preparation software. Training is provided in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service.

Helping Thousands of Residents br

In 2011, 250 volunteers helped over 20,000 Mainers with returns and tax-related inquiries. An impressive 14,386 returns were filed through the program, all for free. This represents a 12% increase over the number of Mainers helped in 2010!

“Every year, thousands of people return to AARP Foundation Tax-Aide and our volunteers are a big reason for that. They are friendly, helpful, and know what they’re doing,” explains Bean.
