AARP Oklahoma to Partner with Food Banks on Expanding Senior Hunger Programs Volunteers Needed
The Regional Food Bank’s Senior Mobile Pantry, which currently serves about 1,000 seniors monthly, will reach an additional 534 people as a result of AARP Funding. AARP also is helping the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma establish a Pilot Senior Feeding Program to serve 200 people twice weekly in three counties.
These projects target five sites in Central Oklahoma and eight areas in northeast Oklahoma without easy access to affordable nutritious food.
Statewide, more than 16 percent of households struggled to put enough food on the table from 2008 to 2010.
Volunteers are needed to help distribute food in local areas as part of the Senior Mobile Pantry program and to help with the establishment of the Senior Backpack Program in eastern Oklahoma. Volunteers will also be trained to distribute information on enrollment in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP.)
