Serve Colorado – Governor’s Commission on Community Service has recognized AARP Colorado again for its community activism and volunteerism.

Serve Colorado, a program to promote volunteers statewide, honored AARP Colorado recently with a certificate of recognition for its service and contributions to Serve Colorado and the 2012 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Serve Colorado also gave a nod to AARP Colorado staff and volunteers last year for their participation in the 2011 MLK Day of Service.

“It is through the support of our partners that we can help promote Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of equality and opportunity for all while strengthening our local communities,” Colorado Lt. Gov. Joseph Garcia said of AARP’s contributions, both in-kind and financial. “An investment in volunteerism is an investment in the State of Colorado.”

On Jan. 16, more than 2,000 people volunteered at 65 service projects throughout the state. In addition, as part of the AmeriCorps Colorado Literacy Matters Book Drive, more than 10,000 books were collected statewide in honor of .

AARP Colorado Create The Good lead Cathy Lasnik was instrumental in collaborating with Serve Colorado and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

“Both Cathy and AARP State Director Morie Smile braved extremely cold temperatures to participate in the MLK Jr. Day of Service on behalf of AARP,” said Angela Cortez, associate state director (communications). “It is one of the largest events and parades in the country and we are extremely happy to be able to support the Governor’s Office each year in making this day even more special.”
