Happy 50th Birthday Mustang

The Ford Mustang turned 50 on April 17 and got its own AARP card. Over the years more than 9 million of this true American icon have roamed the roadways. Here are some memories and milestones:

The Beginning

Ex-GM designer Phil Clark did first sketches for a new Ford sports car and the running pony emblem.

Hello World

Ford introduces the Mustang at the World's Fair in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., on April 17, 1964. It's priced at $2,368.

A Wise Purchase

Gail Wise bought the very first production Mustang in 1964 at age 22. She paid $3,447.50. Here she is pictured in 2010. She still owns it.

Mustang Sally

"All you wanna do is ride around, Sally," Wilson Pickett sang in his 1966 hit, "Mustang Sally." The Young Rascals, Sam & Dave, Los Lobos, Bruce Springsteen, B.B. King and Eric Clapton, and other artists covered the R&B classic, written by Bonny "Mack" Rice.

Top of the World

A Mustang convertible rode the Empire State Building's passenger elevators, in four sections, to be reassembled for display on the 86th-floor observation deck in 1965.

A Short-lived Shelby

In 1967, Elektra Records was rumored to have bought Jim Morrison of "The Doors" a brand-new Shelby GT500. Rumor has it, Morrison promptly drove it into a telephone pole on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Made for the Movies

Steve McQueen drove a Shelby GT390 during the legendary 9-minute, 42-second chase scene in the 1968 movie Bullitt.

Clinton s Car

President Bill Clinton had to leave his beloved 1967 Clearwater Aqua Mustang convertible behind in Arkansas when he moved into the White House in 1992, but he had a chance to ride in this hot pink one at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1994.

Bucket List Ride

In the 2007 movie The Bucket List, terminally ill Carter Chambers (played by Morgan Freeman) lists "Drive a Mustang Shelby" as one of the things he wants to do before he dies.

Late-Night Ride

Former Tonight Show host Jay Leno, a well-known car aficionado, owns several Mustangs. He’s pictured here with a white and blue 1965 Shelby GT350, a model he owns. The car in red is a 2005 Shelby Mustang GT.

Fresh Off the Lot

A 2014 Mustang V6 premium convertible costs $31,610 — no extra charge for all-time favorite red.
