Pennsylvania will choose its 46th Governor in 2010, electing a successor to Democrat Ed Rendell who is constitutionally prohibited from seeking a third term in office. The high-profile race features candidates on both sides who previously won statewide elections and have already raised significant campaign funds. Historical election results show the PA Governor’s office tends to change parties every eight years, but Democrats currently enjoy a significant voter registration edge that was expanded during the 2008 presidential campaign. To help PA AARP members make an informed voting decision, the state office recently hosted a series of interviews with four Democrats and two Republicans campaigning for the job. The candidates appeared individually and answered the same series of questions posed by 25 volunteer leaders from throughout the state on important issues like the state pension crisis, property taxes, long-term care funding, consumer protection and government integrity. The candidate interviews were recorded and are posted on a special that you can access.

The interviews offer a great opportunity to compare notes on the candidates by assessing their positions on issues important to older Pennsylvanians and their families before voting in the state’s May 18 primary election. But you can’t vote if you’re not registered. The voter registration deadline is April 19 for the May primary election. Learn more about online.
