AARP presented its 2009 Legislative Leadership Award to Senator Byron Dorgan at a February 27 ceremony in Bismarck. The award recognizes Dorgan for his work to champion legislation to improve the lives of Americans age 50-plus and their families. Dorgan was among 21 members of Congress who took action on legislation that will help older Americans by improving health care and bringing down overall health care costs, protecting the economic and retirement security of older Americans, and ensuring that their communities are affordable, safe and accessible. Dorgan was specifically recognized for his efforts to provide Americans with access to safe, lower-cost prescription drugs from abroad to make prescription drugs more affordable for all Americans who cannot afford their medications. “We want to recognize the hard work that our lawmakers have taken on the issues that are most critical to our members and all Americans,” said AARP North Dakota State Director Janis Cheney. “Making prescription drugs more affordable has long been one of AARP’s top priorities. Senator Dorgan championed the effort to establish a framework for the safe, legal importation of prescription drugs from abroad, which would have improved competition and helped to bring down the skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs.” Cheney, along with AARP volunteer Carole Watrel of Bismarck, presented the award to Dorgan before a group of AARP members and volunteers.
