Report Home The concerns of West Virginia AARP members and the issues they think should be AARP's top legislative priorities in their state are examined in this late 2004 mail survey. Access to affordable prescription drugs is the top priority for 79 percent of those surveyed while availability, cost, and quality of health care, and protecting pensions and retirement savings resonated with 75 percent of the respondents. Member opinion (61 percent) supports changing West Virginia law to allow individuals who qualify to receive both Social Security retirement benefits and full unemployment benefits at the same time. State law currently eliminates all unemployment benefits if a person is also collecting Social Security retirement benefits. The mail survey was conducted between November and December 2004. A random sample of 2,000 West Virginia members was selected from AARP's membership database of whom 58 percent returned surveys by the due date, providing 1,161 usable surveys for analysis. The report was prepared by Rachelle Cummins of AARP Knowledge Management who may be contacted at 202-434-6297 for further information.
