AARP Arizona Volunteers Deliver Thousands of Petitions to Local Members of Congress

AARP Arizona volunteers delivered thousands of petitions from AARP members and local constituents to the district offices of Arizona’s members of Congress in late July calling on them to not cut Social Security and Medicare benefits as part of any deal to reduce the nation’s deficit.

AARP nationwide delivered the petitions in an effort to take Social Security and Medicare benefits off the table for any deficit negotiations that were happening on Capitol Hill.

"Social Security and Medicare are critical to the health and retirement security of thousands of Arizonans today and in the future,” said AARP Arizona State Director David Mitchell.

Nearly 4.5 million petitions were signed across the country and delivered to Congress in July. In Arizona, over 27,000 petitions were delivered to Arizona Senators Jon Kyl and John McCain. In addition, each Arizona congressional representative received petitions from constituents in their own districts:
Rep. Paul Gosar: 3853 petitions
Rep. Trent Franks: 5740 petitions
Rep. Ben Quayle: 2753 petitions
Rep. Ed Pastor: 1084 petitions
Rep. David Schweikert: 2586 petitions
Rep. Jeff Flake: 3643 petitions
Rep. Raul Grijalva: 2309 petitions
Rep. Gabriella Giffords: 4810 petitions
Rep. John McCain: 27,322 petitions
Rep. Jon Kyl: 27,322 petitions
