AARP Colorado Delivers Thousands of Petitions

Did you know that AARP Colorado volunteers collected and then delivered petitions with 20,000 signatures to local members of Congress this summer? Associate State Director – Advocacy Kelly Fritts and a handful of advocacy volunteers delivered the petitions in late July. The petitions are part of a larger effort on behalf of AARP Colorado and the entire association to take Social Security and Medicare benefits off the table for deficit reductions. “We were very proud to deliver the real voices of people who live here in Colorado and who are united in their opposition to cutting the hard earned benefits that they have paid into for their retirement,” Fritts said. “The petitions represented Democrats, Republicans and Independents who opposed any cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits as part of any deal to pay the nation’s bills.” More than 1.2 million Coloradans rely on Social Security and Medicare benefits. Volunteers dropped-off petitions with Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet in Denver. “I think our hard work – if nothing else – shows where we continue to stand on Social Security and Medicare,” said AARP Colorado State Director Morie Smile. “There is no doubt that Congress was informed of what we believe – that our members and all Americans 50-plus have worked for these critical benefits and we expect to get them when we need them.” More than 4.5 million petitions were signed across the country and delivered to Congress. Barry Rand, AARP CEO, and Nancy LeaMond, executive vice present of AARP’s State and National Group, also have made pleas to Congress to protect Social Security and Medicare from harmful cuts.
