Many want to keep Medicare Social Security funding

The song is different, but the refrain is the same: Do not cut our social programs.

The latest shows Americans are opposed to cutting treasured entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security.

In a question about how Americans feel about an impending government shutdown, almost 8 in 10 responded that Congress should compromise.

But how? That's the government's job. Figure it out, respondents say, but don't touch our programs.

"Fewer than half of respondents say cutting Medicare benefits or raising the age at which Americans receive Social Security retirement benefits would have a large impact on the deficit, and only 2 in 10 favor cutting Medicare benefits," according to the poll.
