But we can’t give up — and social media is our best hope of influencing the next debate. The debate commission says it will consider questions for the second presidential debate on Oct. 9 based on trending topics on Twitter.

— Continue your AARP benefits, discounts, magazine & more That’s why we’re launching a new tool to grab the moderators’ attention and urge them to press the candidates on Social Security. It’s called Thunderclap, and it enables thousands of people to send the same message at the same time. Already more than 4,000 people have used it to urge the next moderators, CNN’s Anderson Cooper and ABC’s Martha Raddatz, to ask the candidates a question about Social Security at the town hall. And we’re just getting started. Here's how you can join in: First, . Choose where you'd like to share our message to the debate moderators — Facebook or Twitter. Once you've picked, a pop-up window will preview your message. Click the “Add my support” button. You will be asked to log in to your account. Don't worry! Thunderclap will never see your password or private information — it will just post this special message on Oct. 5. If you are using Facebook, click “OK” first to verify your account, and then click “OK” again to confirm your privacy settings. If you are using Twitter, click “Authorize App” when prompted. Remember: Thunderclap will only be allowed to post this one-time message from your social media account, and will not post anything else. If you participate, your voice will be united with thousands of others in urging the moderators to ask about Social Security. (And even if you don’t go on social media, you can still email a friend and invite them to join.) Thunderclap can be a game changer.
