Long Term Care Bills Would Protect Vulnerable Oklahomans Advocacy
Long Term Care Bills Would Protect Vulnerable Oklahomans
Two major components of AARP Oklahoma’s Legislative Agenda concern protecting nursing home residents. SB 1289 by Sen. Harry Coates, R-Seminole, would expand the list of people who may not be hired in long-term care facilities. This measure clarifies the definition of a conviction and closes a loophole in the Nurse Aide Registry that currently allows those convicted of caretaker abuse to work in nursing homes. Watch Senator Clark Jolley, R-Edmond, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Human Services discuss the bill in an interview with AARP Oklahoma posted on our . Also interviewed is Marilyn Kipps who discovered an aide who worked in her mother’s nursing home had a past caretaker abuse conviction. SB 1879 by Sen. Dan Newberry, R-Tulsa, would require nursing homes to immediately report rape to local law enforcement officials. Watch an interview with Senator Newberry and Oklahoma State Ombudsman Ether Houser as they discuss the bill, also on the page.
