How You Can Take Action Advocacy
Many people would agree that change is not always easy, but it is possible and sometimes it can take just one person to make a huge difference. One way to make your voice heard is to stay in touch with your elected officials at both the state and national levels. Writing letters and making phone calls to your legislators about the issues that matter to you can be very empowering! This is the public’s part in the legislative process.
When you write or call, legislators listen. Each year, thousands of AARP New Jersey members and volunteers help shape the course of legislative action by contacting their legislators on critical issues. Often it is this personal involvement that makes the difference between success and failure when it comes to legislative initiatives.
There are many examples of this including the recent budgetary decision regarding PAAD, the state’s prescription drug program for the disabled and for low-income older residents. The proposal AARP fought against would have mandated a first-ever deductible of $310 AND increased the brand-name drug co-pays from $7 to $15 per prescription. AARP activists came to the rescue and together we directed thousands of calls and letters to legislators. The day before our May 2010 advocacy summit in Trenton, Governor Christie rescinded the proposal. More than 140,000 individuals in New Jersey rely on this vital program and if you took the time to speak out on this issue, we thank you for that.
This is how we can make a difference! Your voice counts. AARP urges you to stay in touch as we move into this next election season. There are many more issues of importance to our members that will surface and we hope we can count you on to work with us again.
We will soon be posting our Congressional voter guides on this website and we certainly hope you will take the time to see where your candidates stand on the issues in question including Social Security and health care.
