AARP Utah Advocacy and Issues Stay Informed Get Involved Advocacy
Oct. 28, AARP Utah teamed up with AARP Oregon for a tele –town hall on Healthy Aging with Dr. Allen Douma, M.D., a member of the AARP Board of Directors. Joining the call were 11,544 AARP members representing both states. Topics included new preventive services available under the new health care law, becoming an informed patient and a variety of ways an individual can "Master Aging" through information and action.

What’s Coming Up on the Hill
The Utah State Legislature’s General Session convenes on Jan. 24, and runs for 45 days. The issues AARP Utah will be focusing on during the 2011 session include state health care reform, in particular, further development of Utah's insurance exchange and risk adjuster, manufactured housing affordability issues, state budget concerns, and opposing an increase on the sales tax on food.

Get Involved
There are a number of ways people can become more involved with these important issues including:
Attend Democracy Day at the State Legislature: Together with the Utah Housing Coalition and the Community Action Program of Utah we will bring citizens together for “Democracy Day” at the State Capitol on Jan. 31 2011. This annual event trains Utahns on how to become an advocate for community causes, how to follow the legislative process, and how to organize a citizen coalition. The day includes time with the state legislators where constituents can discuss issues one-on-one with their representatives. More information will be coming over the next few weeks including the event’s timetable, how to register for the event, speakers, etc. Check back with for more information as it becomes available.
Become an AARP Utah Advocacy volunteer: Meet with the legislators of your district to inform them of AARP’s position on specific issues, write letters to your legislators and to your local newspaper, attend hearings at the Capitol, and work with other advocates in the community to improve the lives of consumers in our state.

More than 8,200 Utah AARP members participated in AARP Utah’s tele-town hall meeting on financial fraud held Oct. 27. Emceed by AARP Utah State Director Rob Ence, the guest speaker was Keith Woodwell, Director of the Utah Division of Securities.
