Speak Out to Protect Your Benefits

As we continue to fight to protect Medicare and Social Security, all eyes are on the so-called “Supercommittee”, the bipartisan group established by Congress to identify ways to reduce the federal deficit. The Supercommittee’s 12 U.S. Senators and Representatives, including of Massachusetts are still considering potential cuts to Medicare and Social Security as part of a deal to pay the nation’s bills.

AARP believes we must stop Congress from making a political deal that cuts your Medicare and Social Security benefits. Instead of cutting the benefits you’ve worked for, Congress should reduce the deficit by cutting waste and closing tax loopholes.

Now more than ever, seniors and middle class Americans rely on the retirement benefits they’ve paid into their entire lives. In these tough economic times, cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits could dramatically increase seniors’ health care costs, threaten their access to doctors and hospitals and reduce the benefit checks they rely on to pay the bills.

About a million Massachusetts residents rely on Medicare. They pay an average of $5,500 annually, out of their own pockets, for medical expenses. And, that number is rising every year. Meanwhile, their Social Security benefits remain modest by any standard, at approximately $14,000 a year. But these are not just statistics and numbers. These are real people – .
