Nix the Tax

by Will Yandik - 1/01/2012 As part of the Coalition for Missouri's Future, AARP aims to defeat the "everything" tax, which would replace the state income tax with an expanded sales tax of 10 percent on — well, just about everything, from milk and bread to emergency room visits and in-home care.

Proponents of the proposed tax are trying to put the measure on the ballot later this year. AARP Missouri and other opponents caution that, if enacted, the tax would leave the state with a budget shortfall of more than $3 billion, while placing a greater burden on poor people and those on fixed incomes.

"Higher prices for meals, medications and health care would do nothing to help our state's residents," said Norma Collins, AARP associate state director for advocacy.
