AARP Taking Nominees for Stephen J Gools Award Advocacy
The award honors the life of Steve Gools, former state director of AARP Michigan, who passed away this year. Gools was a man who cared deeply and had a strong passion for improving the lives of others – especially those who were unable to do so alone.
“Steve was a role model and a shining example of leadership, intellectual curiosity, courage and determination,” said Jacqueline Morrison, state director of AARP Michigan. “He was dedicated to helping those who could not help themselves.”
Gools was director of AARP Michigan for12 years. He leaves a legacy of passion and commitment for the rights of those over age 50 across the state.
His innovative volunteer training and development conferences served as a model at AARP.
Prior to joining AARP, Gools served as communications director for the Michigan Democratic Party and held senior management positions with Michigan candidates and elected officials, including U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow. He also worked for the bipartisan Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition and the U.S. House Budget Committee Task Force on Community and Natural Resources.
Award criteria includes:
Nominees can be an individual, couple, group or non-profit organization in Michigan and must be at least 18 years of age.
Nominees must reside in Michigan, and the work they are being nominated for must result in positive social change within the state.
The achievement(s) must include work accomplished within a one-year period prior to presentation of the award, which will be in November.
Applications, , must be received by AARP Michigan by Oct. 5, 2011.
