Voters' Guide

by Donnan Runkel - 12/01/2011 In Nevada — where the fifth-in-the-nation Republican caucus is slated for Feb. 4 — AARP aims to ensure voters are well informed when they go to the polls. AARP invited each of the leading GOP presidential candidates to participate in a video voters' guide. The candidates fielded questions on retirement security issues such as jobs, the economy, Social Security and Medicare.

Voters gathering at Nevada's Democratic caucus meetings on Jan. 21 are likely to unite behind President Barack Obama for reelection.

Time to Review

by Donnan Runkel - 11/01/2011 AARP Nevada is making calls and leaving messages to alert thousands of Medicare beneficiaries to review their policies during open enrollment, Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.

"New prescription drug and health plan choices are available every year, and now is the time to make sure your plan meets your needs," said Maria Dent, AARP associate state director for community outreach. "In addition, new preventive benefits are available under the Affordable Care Act, so be sure to schedule wellness visits and screenings such as prostate or breast exams."

Keep the House

by Donnan Runkel - 6/01/2011 The housing bubble is still bursting in Nevada. One of every 35 homes is in foreclosure — the highest rate of any state in the nation. To help Nevadans who are struggling to meet mortgage payments, AARP is supporting two bills that would strengthen consumer protections. AB300 would close loopholes in a law that allows homeowners to request mediation for loan modifications. AB308 would revise regulations for foreclosure consultants and provide penalties for predatory lending practices. To learn more about the issue, go to . For questions about foreclosure in Nevada or Arizona, call the AARP Foundation Mortgage Assistance Program at 1-800-635-1402.
