Democracy at Work

by Donnan Runkel - 12/01/2011 AARP and the Community Action Partnership of Utah will sponsor Democracy Day on Jan. 30 in Salt Lake City. Participants will tour the Capitol, hear about legislative issues, learn how to lobby legislators and have lunch with their representatives in the rotunda.

Keen Minds

by Donnan Runkel - 10/01/2011 AARP Utah will sponsor two "Staying Sharp" forums in November to help Utahns maintain mental and financial fitness. Kevin Duff, associate professor of neurology at the University of Utah, will offer tips for brain health and memory retention. An expert from the Utah Securities Division will discuss the latest scams and how to avoid them.

An AARP survey earlier this year showed 96 percent of state residents age 50-plus are concerned about staying mentally sharp, and 91 percent are concerned about meeting daily expenses.

Slated for Provo on Nov. 5 and Ogden on Nov. 19, the event is free, but preregistration is required. For details, go to or call 1-866-233-2068 toll-free.

Unsung Heroes

by Donnan Runkel - 5/01/2011 AARP Utah wants to honor the most skilled, committed, outstanding, dedicated volunteers — and is encouraging members across the state to nominate such people to receive volunteer awards. Recognizing that AARP and many other organizations are fueled by volunteer power, AARP's Outstanding Volunteer Award for Community Service will commend those who really help keep things running. To nominate someone for an award, email Jill Duke at or call her at 801-567-2642. Winners will be selected in June, and presentations will be made in the winners' hometowns.
