Giving Back

by Donya Currie - 11/01/2011 Celebrating the spirit of Thanksgiving, AARP Florida is organizing a food drive benefiting Drive to End Hunger and Feeding South Florida.

As part of the festivities, AARP staff and volunteers will cheer NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon at the Homestead Miami Speedway on Nov. 20, as the No. 24 Drive to End Hunger car zooms round the track in the final race of the season. To promote the race and raise awareness about hunger, AARP also is bringing the race car to the Southland Mall in Miami on Nov. 17 from 3 to 7 p.m. Other efforts include a "mobile food pantry" that takes affordable fresh produce to a Miami neighborhood.

More than 16 percent of Florida households struggle to put food on the table. To find out how you can help, visit or call 1-855-383-4669 toll-free.

An Ounce of Prevention

Outreach efforts have included a health forum in Tampa, where more than 230 men received vouchers for free screenings, and workshops for clergy and barbers to encourage them to spread the word about early detection. Cancer tends to hit minorities harder than whites, but screening rates are lower among blacks and Hispanics, according to the American Cancer Society. Under the new health care reform law, insurance plans are required to cover colorectal screening for adults age 50-plus. To learn more, visit .
