Insurance Exchange

by Donya Currie - 11/01/2011 In a special legislative session this month, lawmakers are considering a bill to establish a state health insurance exchange. As part of the federal Affordable Care Act, the exchange is expected to expand insurance options and make it easier for consumers to compare insurance plans. AARP represented consumers in discussions with legislators as the bill was being drafted.

Donya Currie - 10/01/2011 With Medicare Part D open enrollment beginning earlier than usual this year, AARP is spreading the word about enrollment events in North Dakota.

Open enrollment runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 for both the newly eligible and those already participating in Part D prescription drug plans. This period is the only yearly opportunity to switch plans.

Members with an interest in public speaking are encouraged to volunteer. AARP has launched a national effort to stimulate conversations about the need to and what people can expect as states begin to roll out programs required by the new federal health care reform law. Community groups are invited to schedule speaking engagements on either or both topics. Marguerite Salazar, regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will be the keynote speaker at both events — in Bismarck on May 17 and Fargo on May 18. Salazar will touch on benefits of health care reform such as preventive screenings in Medicare. In addition, AARP staff will summarize issues of importance to state residents age 50-plus that came up during the recent legislative session, which ended in April.
