AARP Colorado Participates in Diverse Weekend Celebrations

Tens of thousands cheer on AARP Colorado’s super-hero garb and Segway riding skills in popular Pride Parade. AARP Colorado staff participated in Denver's Juneteenth celebration and the Pride Parade on June 18 and 19.

Thousands of people flocked to Juneteenth. Mixed in with live music were vendors, food and information about the history of Juneteenth, which marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865 when slaves in Texas learned they were free. Mayor-elect Michael Hancock said the Denver observance of Juneteenth is one of the largest in the country. AARP Colorado co-sponsored the event and volunteers handed out crucial information about AARP campaigns and programs.

Also one of the largest in the country is Denver's Pride parade, which is considered the sixth largest in the nation. Donning capes of different colors, AARP staff members rode Segways in the parade. We are happy to report that there were no serious injuries.

But all kidding aside, AARP’s work on behalf of 50+ Colorado citizens received wonderful exposure during the event, as well as much applause. The parade route was 2.5 miles, stretching from Cheesman Park to Civic Center Park in Denver. There were tens of thousands of people in attendance and more than 120 organizations participated. Pride organizers said that more families and children are attending the parade each year.

In addition to AARP Colorado’s participation and affiliation with the Pride parade, the Walgreens bus was available to provide screenings at Civic Center Park for Pride participants and attendants.

Gov. John Hickenlooper was the first Colorado governor to speak at the parade since 1994.
