AARP Colorado scored a big hit with its Latino members and their families last year when it offered complementary seats to the presentation of Su Teatro’s Christmas play: A Colorado en una Noche de Navidad.

The event was so successful that AARP Colorado is sponsoring a new play again this year in Denver and adding a show in Pueblo. The performances to take place this fall will likely “sell out” 300 seats at Centro Su Teatro, 721 Santa Fe Drive, set for Dec. 11, and 500 seats in Pueblo at the Sangre de Cristo Theater Arts Center at 210 N. Santa Fe Ave. on Nov. 20.

This year’s play is Corridos del Barrio. It’s based on the experiences of the Latino residents of the Auraria neighborhood in West Denver before the Metropolitan State College campus was established and moved into the area. It’s a lively play with music, dance and dialogue that invokes memories and the Latino experience in Colorado.

“I think the message is clear that Latinos in Colorado are connected through the generations, and I believe that our AARP Hispanic members see a lot of value in this type of programming,” said AARP Multicultural Director Roberto Rey. “It’s also an opportunity to give back to the community with AARP members contributing donations that will go toward dropout prevention programming provided by Su Teatro and to the G.I. Forum in Pueblo for scholarships.”

Southern Colorado, including Pueblo and Colorado Springs, is a very important area for AARP. Overall, AARP has 650,000 Colorado members. Of that, tens of thousands are in Southern Colorado, and Pueblo has the highest concentration of Hispanic AARP members than any other area in the nation.

“We want to make sure our members are getting the value they deserve from AARP Colorado,” said AARP State Director Morie Smile. “In addition to our advocacy efforts that range from fighting cuts to Social Security to keeping utilities affordable, we know that our members are interested in the arts and appreciate a program of this nature, which speaks to their heritage.”
