Men 50 Grab Golden Globe Honors
Women were snubbed — but grownup films got extra Oscar oomph
Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images, Neilson Barnard/Getty Images, Michael Loccisano/Getty Images Denzel Washington, Allison Janney and Kevin Bacon are among the nominees. The Golden Globe Award nominations announced Dec. 11 were great news for male talents over age 50, who took 54 percent of the honors. Hollywood is less kind to women as they age: In female categories, only 37.1 percent of nominees were over age 50 — putting the overall grownup nomination rate at 47 percent. However, all five drama nominees are of great interest to AARP audiences (expect to see some, most or all of them at both AARP's Movies for Grownups Awards in February and the Oscars on March 4). Men over 50 dominated the best director and best original score races, too. Helen Mirren, 72, winner of , was a surprise Globe nominee for The Leisure Seeker, as was Judi Dench, 83, for Victoria & Abdul. The noms also lofted the Oscar odds for The Shape of Water, the first English-language smash by Guillermo del Toro, 53; The Post, by Steven Spielberg, 70; and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, whose Frances McDormand, 60, is the frontrunner for Oscar's best actress award. Two last-minute films screened for Globe voters —The Greatest Showman and All the Money in the World — got many votes from the 90 or so members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. HFPA members probably rewarded All the Money in the World for sacking disgraced star Kevin Spacey and replacing him with Christopher Plummer, 87, as cold-hearted billionaire J. Paul Getty. Variety pundit Kristopher Tapley tweeted, "Christopher Plummer should write a book: How to Get a Golden Globe Nomination in Three Weeks. Seriously, he started shooting 11/21. That's got to be a record." The Globe nominations also spell good Emmy news for Big Little Lies and The Crown, and also for Feud: Bette and Joan's Jessica Lange, 68, and Susan Sarandon, 71. But the nominations were very bad news for some. The Globes snubbed hopefuls Detroit, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool and Wonderstruck. Recent scandals harmed the chances of The Meyerowitz Stories, starring Dustin Hoffman, 80, and many Amazon hopefuls, like The Big Sick. But the Globes aren't the end of the awards season. Its eccentric voters were widely ridiculed by the industry for years until the Golden Globe show began to attract 20 million viewers, earn $42 million a year and influence voting for the Academy Awards. Don't count anybody out yet: This year's awards races are still very much up for grabs.Golden Globe Nominees 50 in bold
