SEPT. 3: It's hard to remember when one of Gladwell's books hasn't been on the best-seller list (The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers). Drawn to counterintuitive ideas, The New Yorker writer will surely hit the list anew with David and Goliath, about how underdogs sometimes win.

50 Richard Marx

SEPT. 16: The Grammy-winning rock guy with the night-themed '80s ballads ("Endless Summer Nights," "Hold On to the Nights"), Marx lives in Chicago, still performs and is a big jokester on Twitter. Example: "So if you literally cannot control what you tweet … is that Twittourette Syndrome?"

60 Amy Irving

SEPT. 10: Irving's first big part was in the film version of Stephen King's 1973 novel Carrie. She wed Steven Spielberg in 1985 and received $100 million when they divorced within four years. Now married to a documentary filmmaker, Irving has lately been more involved with stage than screen.

60 Rita Rudner

SEPT. 17: The comedienne has described herself as "cynically silly." She has a regular gig at the Venetian in Las Vegas and in 2009 performed (nervously) for President Obama. A classic Rudner quip: "You have to let your husband be himself [in bed], and you have to pretend he's someone else."

70 Roger Waters

SEPT. 6: The Pink Floyd bassist and lyricist based the legendary 1979 album The Wall on his life. His current The Wall Live tour got weird in July when props at a Belgium concert included an inflatable black pig emblazoned with the Star of David. Some called it anti-Semitic, which Waters denied.

70 Julio Iglesias

SEPT. 23: The Spanish crooner has sold some 300 million records, and this year he was honored as China's "most popular international artist of all time" (he's huge there). He's now on a world tour with no plans to retire. He told a Mexican journalist, "It would be like dying on the inside."

80 Robert Blake

SEPT. 18: As a kid he was a little rascal on Our Gang and later played real-life killer Perry Smith in 1967's In Cold Blood. He also was arrested, then acquitted, in his wife Bonny Lee Bakley's 2001 murder, which apparently inspired his recent rant on CNN about "those rotten, bastard cops."

80 David McCallum

SEPT. 19: The Scottish actor costarred with Robert Vaughn in the 1960s spy series The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (being remade as a feature-length movie). Now McCallum plays medical examiner Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard on CBS's NCIS, whose 11th season premieres on Sept. 24.

80 Karl Lagerfeld

SEPT. 10: The German fashion designer for Fendi and Chanel lives in Paris with his adored cat Choupette, who has two maids and more than 31,400 Twitter followers (she's rather opinionated: See @ChoupettesDiary). Lagerfeld told CNN, "I never thought I'd fall in love like this with a cat."

80 Donna Douglas

SEPT. 26: In the 1960s, Douglas was Elly May Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies. This year the actress-turned-gospel-singer released Southern Favorites With a Taste of Hollywood, including recipes from pals, such as Pat Boone's Blonde Brownies and Debbie Reynolds' Carrot Casserole.
