Van Morrison, 70: The Moondance singer from Northern Ireland defies labels — genre-mixing pop, R&B, Irish folk music and everything in between. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June.

Itzhak Perlman, 70: The master violinist has played at the White House for Queen Elizabeth II and won enough Grammy Awards to sink a ship. A music writer recently called him the Babe Ruth of Classical Music.

Frank Robinson, 80: April marked 40 years since the baseball legend became the first African American manager in Major League Baseball. Before that, the MVP was an outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Reds.
