Tom Selleck Diane Lane Eddie Van Halen all celebrate big birthdays

January 3

Stephen Stills, 70: Stills has been creating memorable music for decades — with Crosby, Stills & Nash (and Young), and as a guitarist and songwriter (“Love the One You’re With”). He’s been working on his memoir without the aid of a ghostwriter, he told Rolling Stone. “I got an 800 verbal [score] on my SAT.”

January 4

Julia Ormond, 50: The British actress, who plays Megan Draper’s flirtatious mother on Mad Men, is known for her roles in period films such as Legends of the Fall (1994) and First Knight (1995). This spring she’ll appear in Mary, a movie about the biblical Mary and Joseph.

January 6

Rowan Atkinson, 60: The comedian is famous in Britain as the star of the Mr. Bean sitcom and movies; in the U.S. he may be best known for his role as the blundering priest in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994). He collects cars, including a $1 million McLaren F1, which he crashed in 2011.

January 10

Rod Stewart, 70: The spiky-haired British rocker is on tour, soon to hit Australia. Aussie audiences are sure to hear his 1978 hit “ Ya Think I’m Sexy?” He’ll never tire of singing it, he’s said: “It’s so joyous.” Stewart now has eight kids, including a son who turns 4 in February.

January 13

Jay McInerney, 60: McInerney captured a cocaine-fueled slice of 1980s New York life in his ’84 novel, Bright Lights, Big City. Once considered part of the era’s “literary Brat Pack,” along with Bret Easton Ellis and other hot young authors, he’s now a wine connoisseur and writer.

January 16

A.J. Foyt, 80: The retired race-car great started racing midget cars in his teens and went on to become a four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and big-time NASCAR star. In November, Foyt had heart bypass surgery; son Larry has said he’s recovering well.

January 18

Kevin Costner, 60: Star of the new film Black or White, Costner is busy with other pet projects — while raising three young kids. Not that he’s complaining: “I’d love to live forever,” he says in the current issue of AARP The Magazine. “That’s how much I love life.”

Diane Lane, 50: She’s the gorgeous girl next door known for her romantic movies, including A Walk on the Moon (1999), Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) and Nights in Rodanthe (2008). Recently divorced from Josh Brolin, Lane’s set to reprise her role as Superman’s mom in the upcoming Batman v Superman.

January 26

Eddie Van Halen, 60: The master guitarist for the band Van Halen rocked (and partied) hard in the ’80s. Now his Wolfgang (“Wolfie”), 23, is the band’s bassist, recruited by dad at age 15. A proud Van Halen told Guitar World that having Wolfie onstage with him “just feels right.”

January 29

Tom Selleck, 70: The mustachioed Magnum P.I. star has spent five seasons as New York’s police commissioner on CBS’ cop-family drama Blue Bloods. Selleck told an interviewer that real NYPD cops sometimes salute him when they see him on the street.

January 30

Curtis Strange, 60: Strange was golf’s megastar in the late ’80s, known for his intensity on the course (and for making $1 million in a single season — unheard of in 1988). He’s said that his stunning win at the 1989 U.S. Open “was absolutely the pinnacle for me.”
