November Birthday Bonanza

Sally Field Sinbad Bo Derek and more celebrate major milestones

November 4

Laura Bush, 70: If the wife of 43 prefers the title “bookworm” to “first lady,” it’s because the ex-librarian promoted reading as a national priority during her eight years in the White House. She keeps a lower profile these days but graced the September opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. One reason Bush loves books so much: “They help you sleep at night.”

November 6

Sally Field, 70: We can’t deny that we’ve liked her ever since she surfed to teen stardom in the 1960s TV series Gidget. The double Oscar winner pursued a younger coworker in this year’s bittersweet Hello, My Name Is Doris but says aging is no big deal: “Weird things happen all over, but inside you’re the same person you always were.”

November 8

Gordon Ramsay, 50: Never mind the restaurants he has opened or the cooking-contest series he has launched — the British TV chef’s defining trait is his fiery temper. A typical reaction to subpar food: “My Gran can do better. And she’s dead.” Age hasn’t tamed Ramsay’s tongue, and fans hope it never will.

November 10

Sinbad, 60: After a rocky tour of duty in the Air Force, the funnyman once known as David Adkins found his calling as a stand-up comic and a star of sitcoms (A Different World), films (House Guest) and HBO comedy specials. Perhaps only someone with Sinbad’s sense of humor could have worked with both Hillary Clinton (they visited Bosnia together in 1996) and Donald Trump (on TV’s Celebrity Apprentice in 2010).

November 19

Dick Cavett, 80: Deploying his disarmingly neutral Nebraska accent, the TV talk-show host elevated erudite banter to an art form. Today you can catch his encounters with Katharine Hepburn, Marlon Brando and others on the Decades channel. Cavett has stayed current doing spoofs and podcasts with the likes of Malcolm Gladwell and Alec Baldwin. “I don’t feel old,” he says. “I feel like a young man that has something wrong with him.”

November 20

Bo Derek, 60: She’ll always be a perfect 10 to those who remember her as the beach beauty whose cornrows and barely there swimsuit mesmerized Dudley Moore in the 1979 Blake Edwards rom-com. A string of flops followed, but Derek never overinvested in her sex symbol status: “I would be suffering right now because what happens to you with age is out of your hands.”

November 21

Troy Aikman, 50: The legendary quarterback calls his stint with the Dallas Cowboys “12 of the best years of my life.” He led the charge to three Super Bowl victories, the first one a 52-17 blowout of the Buffalo Bills in 1993 that brought him MVP honors. And, in 2006, he gained a perch in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A commentator since 2001, Aikman is also part owner of the San Diego Padres baseball team.
