10 Top Swimsuits for the Summer of 16

Life throws women a lot of curves So flaunt them

Make a Splash

This summer, it seems that swimsuit manufacturers may have finally gotten the message: They’ve given us not only an expanded and more realistic range of sizes but also styles that celebrate bodies of every shape and condition. After canvasing the waterfront, I’ve picked the top 10 swimsuits in which you can really make a splash.

Get Sexy — Not Naked

Life has thrown us all sorts of curves, so let’s show them off! Our French peers have no inhibitions about sunning topless, but we prefer to leave something to the imagination. Peekaboo cutouts that reveal glimpses of skin are hot right now. To spice up your favorite style, simply choose a number with illusionary mesh insets.

The Stealth Bikini

You’ll love the sensual, bare look of a two-piece bandeau bikini that’s disguised as a one-piece: the optional halter strap, the removable soft cups, the 18 percent spandex hold, the bargain price!

Slink or Swim

Who wants boob bounce or fallout when playing beach volleyball, doing yoga or building sand castles with the grandkids? The new active racer and keyhole-back tanks have upped their game, making straps that slip down a mortification of the past. Now we get security for all the pursuits above, plus trendy prints and color blocking — to say nothing of hidden, contoured, wireless cups for support.

Going Out on a Blue Note

This suit gets high marks for its high-neck, zip-front scuba style: the foam-cup shelf bra, the “power panel” tummy smoother, the slimming princess seams and the plus-size W14 to 26 sizing in a trendy blue print.

Wear a Bikini Again You Heard Me

Bikini-clad model Nicola Griffin — age 56, size 16 and currently appearing in a Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue near you — should be inspiration aplenty to reclaim your total-babe status. Don’t worry, I’m not talking about bikinis that amount to no more than a fabric swatch. A retro bikini featuring a high-waisted bottom that covers or just subtly reveals the belly button, paired with a structured bra or halter top — will bring out the Bond girl in all of us.

If You Miss That Old Hollywood Vibe

This combo caught my eye because it sweats the details while keeping you cool. The wide-set straps are adjustable, while the supportive shirred bra is available in regular sizes (underwire bra) or plus sizes (sewn-in soft cups). Not only that, but the shirred, fold-over waistband gives you an adjustable fit on the bottom, and there’s built-in sun protection.

Float Your Bloat

You can stop sucking in your stomach now! Thanks to shirring or ruching, swimsuits designed with panels of mini-pleated fabric and wrap offer camouflage without sacrificing style — or comfort, for that matter. The higher a fabric’s Lycra or spandex percentage is, of course, the more it acts like shapewear. But look for the new “no-squeeze ease” that prevented us from loving control suits in the past.

Crisscross Chic

Experienced swimsuit shoppers will appreciate a number of design tweaks here, notably the gentle camouflage engineered by the overlapping draped panels, the subtle (8 percent) spandex content, the built-in soft-cup shaping and the easy-fit sizes ranging from extra-small to extra-large — not to mention the brilliant color scheme (four solids, two stripes).

Bust a Move

Changes in age and weight may cause breasts to sag, lose volume or change in both cup and band size — so they need our attention. Aim for total breast enclosure (even in plunge-neck suits), an uplift off the rib cage to stretch your torso and a rounded, youthful view from front and sides.

From Low Neckline to High Waist

Among the features that make this a smart, sexy summer choice are the adjustable, widely spaced straps (to control lift), full-coverage cups with removable padding, wide rib-cage-hugging under-bra band, and the choice of eight colors and sizes ranging from extra-small to extra-large.
