October Birthday-palooza

Susan Sarandon Chuck Berry Carrie Fisher and other notables welcome in new decades

October 4

Christoph Waltz, 60: The German-Austrian character actor won an Oscar — and broke out as a major star — playing a silky, sinister SS colonel in the World War II thriller Inglourious Basterds (2009). Three years later he waltzed off with a second trophy, for his turn as a bounty hunter in Django Unchained. In 2017 he joins Kristen Wiig and Matt Damon in the sci-fi social satire Downsizing.

Susan Sarandon, 70: From cult fave The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1975 to feminist parable Thelma & Louise in 1991 to this year’s family dramedy The Meddler, the actress whose career spans five decades seems to grow sexier with every birthday. “I wouldn’t want to be 20 now,” says the five-time Oscar nominee (and winner for 1995’s Dead Man Walking). “I’m much more comfortable in my skin, saggy as it is.”

October 16

Suzanne Somers, 70: As ditsy blond Chrissy Snow, Somers was the crowd favorite on TV’s Three’s Company from 1977 to 1981 (she left in a contract dispute after her 100th episode). She then starred in campy infomercials for Thighmaster and a long-running sitcom, Step by Step. A breast-cancer survivor who has advocated controversial medical treatments, Somers reports that “the biggest myth about aging is that it’s a road to being decrepit, frail and sick.”

Martina Navratilova, 60: The Czech-born tennis superstar sought political asylum in the U.S. 42 years ago, becoming a citizen in 1981. She holds a world-record nine Wimbledon singles titles (six of them in a row), which helps explain this sentiment: “Whoever said ‘It’s not whether you win or lose that counts’ probably lost.” Navratilova married her longtime partner, Julia Lemigova, in 2014.

Chuck Berry, 90: Hail, hail rock ’n’ roll pioneer Berry as he duck-walks into his 10th decade. The St. Louis native has had his ups and downs, hitting No. 1 with “My Ding-a-Ling” in 1972 but weathering ugly brushes with the law earlier in his career. No one can top his dedication to craft, though: Berry gave “a shot of rhythm and blues” to audiences at a hometown bar one Wednesday night a month from 1996 to 2014.

October 19

Jon Favreau, 50: The comic actor found fame opposite pal Vince Vaughn in 1996’s Swingers, then moved into directing such hits as Elf, Iron Man and the utterly delicious Chef. Favreau’s biggest box-office success was this summer’s live-action Jungle Book (a sequel is in the works). “When it’s all said and done,” according to Favreau, “life is something worthwhile. I want my movies to reflect that.”

October 21

Carrie Fisher, 60: She’s a novelist (Surrender the Pink), screenwriter (Postcards From the Edge) and star of a one-woman show (Wishful Drinking), but Fisher’s fans seem set on trapping her in amber as Princess Leia from Star Wars. Despite her character’s promotion (to General Organa) in last summer’s The Force Awakens, Fisher says, “What I didn’t realize when I was this 25-year-old pinup for geeks was that I had signed an invisible contract to stay looking the same way for the next 30 to 40 years.”

October 26

Pat Sajak, 70: The soul of congeniality was hand-picked by game-show king Merv Griffin to host both the daytime and evening broadcasts of Wheel of Fortune in 1983. Alongside his alter ego (and letter-turner) Vanna White, 59, Sajak continues making jittery contestants feel at home on the set to this day. And boy are his arms tired: Sajak has “give[n] the wheel a final spin” on more than 6,000 nightly episodes.
