Amazon Will Now Deliver Directly to Your Car

Courtesy of Amazon Amazon's new Key In-Car Delivery service will deliver packages directly to your vehicle. Are you ready to let Amazon into your car? The online retail behemoth is counting on it. Starting today, some owners of compatible 2015 or newer models of Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac and Volvo vehicles can get Amazon packages delivered directly to their car. The new service, dubbed Amazon Key In-Car Delivery, is an extension of the Amazon Key program, which was launched last year and offers customers the option of having their packages left inside their home. But whereas the in-home delivery service requires the purchase of a security camera and “smart lock” to allow the delivery person access, in-car delivery is offered for free to all Amazon Prime customers. Last week, Amazon announced that its Prime service, which offers free 2-day shipping and access to original programming through Prime Video in addition to other benefits, now has more than 100 million members. Key In-Car Delivery is the latest perk. The requirements are fairly simple. Customers with compatible cars must download the free Amazon Key app and update their vehicle, account and location. To receive delivery, the car must be parked and stationary in an open, street-level and publicly accessible area. Deliveries can’t be made to underground or private parking garages. In order to open your car, the Amazon Key app will link with an OnStar account (for Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac owners) or an On Call account (for Volvo owners). Once the package has been placed inside the car, you’ll get an alert that it has been delivered and your car has been locked. Rohit Shrivastava, general manager for Amazon Key, told USA Today that the app can be used only to lock and unlock the car; it can’t turn on the ignition. The service is aimed at cutting down on the number of packages that are when left outside homes, and offers customers who know they won’t be around to receive a package on a certain day and time an option to ensure delivery. “Receiving a package securely and reliably in your car, without you having to be there, is something we think many people will appreciate,” said Atif Rafiq, chief digital officer at Volvo Cars. “This intersection between transportation and commerce could very well be the next wave of innovation, and we intend to be at the forefront.” The car-delivery option is available in 37 metro areas (including Chicago, Baltimore and Orlando) for most items on Amazon and includes standard shipping, two-day and same-day delivery. The service is not available for items that weigh more than 50 pounds.
