Report Home In 2001, Texas passed HB 1094, a bill creating the Texas Prescription Drug Assistance Program to cover three prescription drugs a month for low-income Medicare beneficiaries. However, the bill was not funded. A survey of 1,293 AARP members in Texas shows that 76 percent believe it is very important for the state to make prescription drugs more affordable for those in need. Support for funding a prescription drug assistance program in Texas is very high (85 percent), even among members who are not eligible. And 76 percent support funding a state prescription drug program, even if it means reallocating state funds. The survey was mailed to 2,000 randomly selected AARP members in May 2002, and 1,293 surveys were returned for a response rate of 65 percent.
