Report Home The affordability of prescription drugs is an important issue to Hispanics and African Americans. This AARP telephone survey examines the experiences of 2,000 age 18+ Hispanics and African Americans in paying for prescription drugs and their interest in legislation addressing pharmaceutical issues. The impact of employer-provided insurance, government-funded coverage or no insurance coverage is highlighted throughout the study. The survey found that: Of the 73 to 76 percent of those surveyed who purchased prescription drugs within the past year, 41 percent of Hispanics and 38 percent of African Americans had a problem paying for them. Among all respondents, 61 percent of Hispanics and 68 percent of African Americans expressed concern about their ability to pay for prescription medications over the next two years.
