Fat 2 Fit: Charlie Brock: 'Jalking' His Way to Fitness—AARP
Charlie Brock ' Jalking' His Way to Fitness
If jogging is too much for you but walking isn' t quite enough consider " jalking" to stay in shape
If you haven't tried "jalking"—a combination of jogging and walking—you're missing out on Charlie Brock's exercise solution for stressful work and a chronically weak lower back. If jalking isn’t for you, you could still join him for swimming, tai chi, or stretching routines. Charlie, 63, of Nevada City, Calif., maintains his exercise schedule, making changes only to accommodate the seasons. "A chronically weak lower back due to scoliosis," he said, "forces me to stay on top of my routine." Charlie's exercise routine also involves diaphragmatic breathing practices and creative visualizations of peaceful scenes make the exercise fun. Just as important as his physical health, though, is the impact of exercise on his mental health. Charlie's work as a broker associate at a bank never stops. "Essential to my success," he said, "is giving myself the time I need to remain in good health. When my mind and body are in top shape, my business success tends to follow. "Through exercise and other recreational activities, including music, I can keep stress at a reasonable level," he related. Bottom line, he added, "I'm a much happier guy when I stay in shape."
