Looking for a way to kick your fitness program up a notch? Consider adding the fun and challenge of competing with your peers at the Silver Anniversary .

AARP Iowa is proud to support the 25th anniversary events that celebrate the importance and benefits of exercise, competition and interaction as ways to achieve and maintain better physical and mental health.

“Our recent members surveys tell us that Iowa AARP members agree that saying healthy – both physically and mentally active – is extremely important to them as they age, so supporting events like the Iowa Senior Games that offer opportunities to improve wellness and fitness is one of the ways we can help members connect and achieve their goals,” said AARP State Director Bruce Koeppl.

The Iowa Senior Olympics were founded through the West Des Moines Community Education office, headed by Dick Fidler, as a way to engage and benefit 50+ citizens in the community at the time Senior Olympics were forming around the country.

2010 was a record year for participation and awards with nearly 1,900 medals awarded in 68 events and 23 sports. This year’s games add the new sport of Pickelball, a racquet sport played as singles or doubles.

In addition to expanded games and events for the anniversary celebration, 2011 also brings greater opportunity for statewide involvement as Cedar Rapids is hosting a regional Senior Games prior to the state events. With the backing of the Iowa Senior Olympics, The Cedar Rapids Regional Games will be May 13-14 at Coe College.
